William "Ed" Edgar Quillen

September 20, 1950 - February 7, 2025

William Edgar (“Ed”) Quillen, age 74, husband, father, brother, cousin, and friend to many, passed away on February 7, 2025, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

Born in Waynesboro, VA, on September 20, 1950, Ed was a proud member of the first graduating class of Landscape Architecture majors at Virginia Tech in 1974. His expertise and sense of adventure led him to Saudi Arabia, where he worked for ARAMCO for three years, and during which time he traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. After returning to Virginia with his best friend and wife Joan, Ed spent 30 years managing Waynesboro Nurseries and WNI Industrial Services and helping raise their two children.

Ed was a long time member of the Waynesboro Elks and Lions Clubs, the latter of which he served as president several times. He cherished spending quality time with his family, roaming the nursery, and cooking, where he was known for his delicious meats, love of baking, and fabulous french fries. In his later years he enjoyed listening to a variety of music from his favorite spot in the kitchen.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Virginia B. Quillen, and his brother, Richard Max Quillen. He is survived by his wife, Joan H. Quillen; his children, Max H. Quillen (Jo Chan) and Noirin Quillen (Josh Ellinger); his brother, David Quillen (Karen); his sisters, Dana Quillen (Paul Mierzejewski), Susan Q. Goode (Roy), and Nancy Quillen (David Haggart); as well as his nieces, nephews, and cousins near and far, and cherished friends, including Rocky “Nip” Flesher, and all the Bus Barn Buzzards.

Ed will be remembered for his dry humor, big smile, wisdom, generosity, hospitality, and ability to find joy in life's simple pleasures.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Shenandoah at Augusta Health, P. O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939.
