Virginia Micaela Genzmer
Virginia Micaela Genzmer, affectionately known as Vicky, age 87, of New Market, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family at her daughter's home in Bridgewater, VA, on Saturday, April 27, 2024.
Born in Barstow, California, on March 10, 1937, Vicky was the last surviving member of five brothers and four sisters born to the late Melquides and Micaela (Lara) Mares. Raised in Barstow, she was active in choir, school clubs, and basketball during her school years.
Vicky graduated from The Marinello School of Beauty in Los Angeles, CA. After graduation, she worked as a beautician for eight years, then she opened her own shop, Viki's Coiffures, on Main Street in Barstow. She later opened a second shop, Mario's.
Her involvement in the Barstow community was extensive, including roles in the Christian Women's Club, Barstow Chamber of Commerce, Barstow Hospital Auxiliary, and her church communities. She taught Sunday school and participated in church plays at the Mexican Congregational Church and later served various roles at Lenwood Community Church and Trinity Baptist Church with her husband, Rod.
In May 2000, she and Rod relocated to Virginia to be near their daughter, Diane and her family. They quickly settled into the valley, joining Covenant Presbyterian Church and engaging in multiple church activities. She was active with the Republican Women of Shenandoah County. She worked at Sunnyside Retirement Community as a beautician for nine years before finally retiring in 2009.
Vicky was cherished by her family as a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and she loved her family deeply. Always joyful in the Lord, her life was marked by a beautiful smile, her servant heart, compassion, and humility. As a faithful prayer warrior, she brought the needs of family and friends before the throne of God. She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren, attending their numerous activities over the years, and loved being with them as much as possible.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 52 years, Rod, whom she fondly called her rock; her daughter Diane (Mark) Collier, of Bridgewater, VA; her grandchildren Erica Collier of Watertown, MA; Ryan (Whitney) Collier and Marissa (Ben) Fung, all of Bridgewater, VA; her great-granddaughters Hailey and Brynn Collier; her sister-in-law Nancy (Doug) Hudson of Bremerton, WA; Roxie Woods (Dennis) of Roy, WA; along with many loving nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 546 West Mosby Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, on May 18th at 11:00 AM.
