Thomas H. Massey

Thomas Howard Massey, 85, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at his residence in Harrisonburg. He was born on January 25, 1941, in Staunton to the late George Thomas and Wilda Gardener Miller Massey. Thomas was a proud United States Marine who served his country during the Lebanon conflict. During his military service, he was stationed in Hawaii, where he worked as a motor pool driver. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career as a Draftsman and Surveyor, ultimately retiring from Dulles Glass in Manassas, Virginia in 2003. Thomas was an avid sports enthusiast, especially when it came to NASCAR and football. A devoted NASCAR fan, he particularly enjoyed cheering on his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. When football season rolled around, Thomas could always be counted on to root for the Miami Dolphins. He also had a dislike for the Washington Redskins and was just as happy cheering for whichever team happened to be playing against them. Beyond his love of sports, Thomas was a talented and patient woodworker who enjoyed creating things with his hands. Among his favorite projects were intricate castles and houses that he carefully constructed from popsicle sticks. Above all, Thomas treasured his family, especially the exceptionally close relationships he shared with his niece and great niece. Thomas is survived by his niece, Georgianna Thompson and her husband, Dwayne; his brother, Sidney Allen Massey; his great niece, Jacquelyn Dashner and her husband, Captain Collyn Dashner; his great-great niece, Maddie; his former spouse, Rosa Fitzgerald; his special caretaker, Russell Smith; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, John Edward Massey; and his sister, Judy Wilda Massey Bullis. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Gentiva Hospice for the compassion, kindness, and dedicated care shown to Thomas during his final days. Henry Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
