Sylvia Breeden
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Sylvia Elaine Breeden announces her passing after a brave battle with cancer.
Sylvia Elaine Breeden, 72, of Staunton, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home with family and friends present on May 19, 2026.
Sylvia, born in Charlottesville, Virginia on October 14, 1953, was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 51 years, Thomas Carson Breeden.
Sylvia was also preceded in death by her father, Roy H. Harlow; mother, Myrtle Bryant Harlow; and sisters, Bernice Cochran, Judy Gentry, Patsy Marsh, Lilly Cochran and Bertha “Chubby” Harlow.
Sylvia is survived by her son, Marty Breeden (wife, Beverly and family) of Waynesboro; her daughter, Marsha Mathias (husband, Roger and family) of Waynesboro; grandsons, Quentin Blackman and Max O’Hanlon; brothers, Roy “Bobby” Harlow (Diana and family) and Walter Harlow (wife, Sherri and family); sisters, Wanda Roach (husband, Andrew and family) and Nell Brooks (husband, Tim).
Sylvia / “Nana” touched the lives of everyone who had the honor of knowing her. Her life was defined by a deep calling to help others and she carried the spirit of a true caregiver throughout her life and nursing career. Her selflessness, generous spirit, strength, compassion, artistic talents and great cooking will be remembered forever.
Among the many blessings in her life was her cherished friendship with Lynn Meldru that grew from their mutual love of art, family, friends, shared adventures, and unwavering support.
Sylvia also leaves behind her cherished dogs, Eli and Lulu, who were always by her side bringing her endless joy and companionship.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 23, 2026 in the Wintergarden at Hilltop Apartments ,300 Churchville Avenue, Staunton.
