Sylvester "Red" Williamson Sprouse

March 23, 1939 - January 16, 2024

Sylvester Williamson “Red” Sprouse, 84, widower of Dorothy Mae (Clark) Sprouse, of Staunton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at his residence, surrounded by his family. 
Mr. Sprouse was born in Estaline Valley, Virginia on March 23, 1939, a son of the late William Tarrif Sprouse and Vera Anna (Massie) Sprouse. 
Mr. Sprouse retired from many years of service with the United States Postal Service. He was a long standing leader and member of Colonial Heights Assembly of God where he served as a deacon and overseer. He was a worship service leader, played guitar, and served in various other ministries as well. 
Sylvester “Red” was an entrepreneur. Over the years he owned and operated several businesses such as diesel truck repair, multiple convenient stores, gas stations with vehicle repair and a few other ventures. 
Red enjoyed tinkering with tractors, vehicles, mowers and more. He loved to fish and planting large gardens was his passion. He always shared his produce with lots of people. Red was a member and a Governor of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge in Staunton, Virginia.  
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Sprouse was preceded in death by three brothers, Hersey Sprouse, Lynwood Sprouse, and Nelson Sprouse; and two sisters, Louise Nycum and Christine Bennett. 
Surviving, are two daughters, Barbara Shaw and her husband, Richard of Harrisonburg, and Darla Hake and her husband, Scott of Swoope; a son, Ricky Sprouse and his wife, Kim of Greenville; two brothers, Eugene “Gene” Sprouse and his wife, Cindy of Craigsville and Fred Sprouse of Craigsville; three sisters, Vivian Dunsmore and Lula Weeks both of Verona, and Doris Wright of Mint Spring; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Park and her husband, James, Cory Smith and his wife, Sarah, Matthew Sprouse, Kayla Hart and her husband, Matthew, Kristina Shaw, Ethan Smith, Eric Sprouse, and Kyle Shaw, II and his wife, Madison; and five great-grandchildren, Teagan Hart, Emberly Smith, Jackson Hart, Kolter Smith, and Cohen Hart.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2024 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Dennis Taylor. 
Entombment will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Cory Smith, Ethan Smith, Matthew Sprouse, Eric Sprouse, Kyle Shaw, Kristina Shaw, and Kayla Hart.
Honorary pallbearer will be James Callison.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
