Susan Anne Cronin Scharf, 81, of Churchville, and formally of Inlet, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2026, after a brief illness at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. She was born on April 22, 1945, in Flushing, NY, the daughter of the late Jeremiah “Jerry” Joseph, Sr. and Helen Hermoine Waldmann Cronin. After graduating from Queen of the Rosary Academy in Amityville, NY, she graduated from St. John's University in Queens, NY, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree and then earned her Master’s degree at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. Upon graduating from St. John's, Susan immediately started teaching English in the Half Hollow Hills School District at Candlewood Junior High School in Dix Hill, NY, where she spent her entire career. She loved teaching grammar and literature to all her students. After retiring, she and her husband, Rich, moved to Churchville. Susan's favorite place was her beloved log cabin in Inlet, which she enjoyed with her husband. They loved being members of the community, boating, entertaining, playing golf, and going out to dinner. Susan was a voracious reader. She volunteered and was a faithful patron to the libraries in both Churchville and Inlet. Being a faithful member of the Roman Catholic Church was very important to her and was even the treasurer for the Catholic Daughters at Saint Francis Assisi Church in Staunton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband, Richard Scharf. She is survived by her brother, Jeremiah Joseph Cronin, Jr.; her sister, Deborah A. Cronin Vissichelli and her husband, Steven; her nieces, Jennifer (Towee Bull) and Anastasia Cronin (Jeremy Janow), Pamela Vissichelli Bader and her husband, Keith, and Allison Vissichelli; ten great-nieces and nephews; her cousins, Noreen Ryan LaPorta and her husband, Gary, Kate LaPorta (John Kilkenny), and Ryan LaPorta. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Staunton with the Reverend Matthias Lusembo officiating. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Inlet, NY Public Library (162 NY-28, Inlet, NY 13360) or to the Churchville Public Library (3714 Churchville Avenue Churchville, VA 24421).
