Shirley Mae Spritzer Herring

Our family wishes to celebrate the life of Shirley Mae Spitzer Herring (Nana), 87, of Weyers Cave, and with sadness announce her passing on Monday, May 8, 2023 at her home.

She was born on August 5, 1935 and was a daughter of Lawrence Spitzer and Mae Spitzer who preceded her in death.

On December 2, 1954 she married Dallas C. Herring, the love of her life who preceded her in death on January 5, 2009.

Shirley is survived by two children, Gale Coffey, Kurt Herring (Heather Moneymaker); four grandchildren, Haley (Cameron) Echols, Hannah Herring, Harrison (Britney Clark) Herring, Holly (Taylor Corbin) Herring; four great-grandchildren, Tristan Echols, Scarlett Echols, Aamari Herring, Everly Herring; cousin, Keith Spitzer; close friend, Lisa Care.

She spent her professional career as a Registered Nurse. She worked in ICU at various hospitals and she retired after 30 years of service from Western State in Staunton, VA. on January 1, 2003.

Nana wanted to thank her church family at St. James Methodist Church in Mt. Crawford, VA. She loved the Lord! Also thank you to Harry Crawford MD and the staff of Hahn Cancer Center and the care from First Choice Hospice.

Anyone who knew or met Nana described her as always smiling, friendly, and a joy that was contagious. She loved meeting and getting to know new people. Special thanks to all who helped her; the staff at Dairy Queen and Bridgewater Foods in Bridgewater, VA. Patty and Louanna, Sonia and George. Thank you for the love you showed her. She loved you!

The graveside service will be private with close friends and family.

Nana asked that you send donations to Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in lieu of flowers.
