Shirley J. Heatwole Pullin
Shirley Jean Heatwole Pullin, 84, wife of Hugh Elbert Pullin, Jr., passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Brookdale Staunton.
Shirley was born on April 23, 1939, in Ladd, VA. She was the daughter of the late Waid Hampton and Emily Waldine Harner Heatwole.
Also preceding her in death was her nine-year-old sister, Virginia Waldine Heatwole; her other sisters, Ruby Marie Heatwole Miller Cline and Welby Faye Heatwole Hite; her brother, Leonard Waid Heatwole; a niece, Cynthia Miller; and a nephew, Eric Hite.
Shirley met her husband in her driveway in 1994 and they were married on November 7, 1997.
In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her son, Chris Pullin; her daughter, Julie Pullin; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Douglas Miller and his wife, Angel and Zac Hite and his wife, Sunny.
She worked on her family farm, a hatchery and egg farm. She was also a former employee of Woodworth Animal Hospital and Wayn-Tex in Waynesboro. She retired in 2000 from Hershey Chocolate of Virginia in Stuarts Draft after eighteen years of service.
After retiring, she and her husband moved to Highland County to their “seldom seen” home on the side of Jack Mountain. She dearly loved her mountain home where she could ride her ATV, exercise her hound dogs, and take her grandchildren for a ride. She would go up the side of the mountain at night to listen to the animals, owls, and bugs sing their melodies.
Shirley appreciated the joys of life, people, nature, and being active outdoors.
A graveside service will be conducted at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Bill Coffey officiating.
Friends may call at the Heatwole - Pullin Residence or at the funeral home throughout the day on Sunday.
The family would especially like to thank the staff of Brookdale Staunton for all the compassion and care they gave to Shirley in the final months of her life.
