Sherrill Calvin Cheeks

Sherrill Calvin Cheeks, age 91, of Bridgewater Retirement Community, previously from Westminster, MD passed away on February 16, 2025. He was born on September 10, 1933 in Chilhowie, VA, son of the late Worley M. Cheeks and Pearl Crusenberry Cheeks, who had eight children, a whole lot of grandchildren, great-grandchildren (and memorable family reunions!).

He married Shirley Roop on September 6, 1955 and they had three daughters.

Sherrill married Mary Jane Curtis in August 1972 and was a step-father to Joseph Guzinski (Karen) and Mary “Meg” Henline (Gary.) Jane preceded him in death in 2018.

Dr Cheeks graduated from Elmer Wolfe High School, Union Bridge, MD, in 1952, Bridgewater College in 1956, and University of Maryland Medical School in 1960, followed by post graduate residency in Internal Medicine at University of Maryland and Psychiatry/Neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Board certified in Psychiatry/Neurology he continued as an active staff member. Dr Cheeks was Clinical Director of Springfield Hospital at Sykesville Md for 30 years. Among many professional accomplishments, he established five clinics for post traumatic stress disorders to serve Vietnam Veterans and also maintained a private practice at Re-Entry Mental Health until his retirement.

Sherrill was an avid reader, interested in philosophy, religion and history. He is survived by his partner, Shirley, his children Patricia Cheeks (Steve Weaver), Ann Cheeks, Kathryn Cheeks (Cole Stiteler), Joseph Guzinski (Karen) and Mary Henline (Gary), 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren from his first marriage.

He will be missed.

A private celebration of life service will be held in Maryland in the spring.
