Ruth Marie (Bodkin) Swisher

October 24, 1933 - March 21, 2025

Ruth Marie (Bodkin) Swisher, 91, loving wife of the late David Walton Swisher, entered Heaven on Friday, March 21, 2025 at the Legacy at North Augusta in Staunton.
Mrs. Swisher was born at home in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on October 24, 1933, daughter of the late William Henry Bodkin, Sr. and Mary (Johnston) Bodkin.
Ruth began her work career in 1951 for two hearing examiners (Lawyers) with the Civil Aeronautics Board in Washington, D.C. Her federal government career as an administrative assistant at the Department of Interior’s Wolf Trap Farm Park, Vienna, VA ended in 1980.
Ruth was a faithful member and supporter of First Baptist Church of Staunton and previously for 30 years at First Baptist Church of Waynesboro. Her love of the Lord was expressed by serving as Sunday School Teacher, establishing a Conversational English Class at FBC Waynesboro where students from other countries could learn English, and going on FBC Waynesboro mission trips with Habitat for Humanity.
Her passion for service also led her to dedicate her time as a volunteer with the American Red Cross.
Ruth and her husband found great joy in tending to their expansive vegetable garden, where they spent countless hours nurturing plants together. Alongside their gardening passion, they also shared a deep love for creating stained glass art; pieces that will remain in their family for years to come.
Mrs. Swisher was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Swisher was preceded in death by three brothers, William H. Bodkin, Jr., Robert F. Bodkin, and Fred R. Bodkin; and two sisters, Margaret Kelly and Jane Ferguson-Clamp.
Surviving, are two daughters, Peggy Ann Swisher of Williamsburg and Susan Marie (Swisher) Carter and her husband, Brian of Stephens City; four grandchildren, Lindsay Sodee and her husband, Josh, Dr. Lauren Carter Lyles and her husband, Nate, David Tubbs, and Eric Tubbs; two great-grandchildren, Carter Sodee and Lennox Lyles; and a number of nieces,  nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Services are pending.
Burial will be private in Augusta Memorial Park.
It is suggested that those desiring make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church of Staunton, 406 West Frederick Street, Staunton, VA 24401.
