Richard E. Dickerson
Richard Evans Dickerson, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at his residence in Staunton on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
He was born on November 21, 1946, in Lexington, KY, to the late Dr. Z.S. Dickerson, Jr. and Mrs. Mildred Alice Gortney Dickerson.Richard's journey in life was filled with remarkable achievements and a dedication to serving others. After attending Randolph Macon and James Madison University, Richard pursued work in several different areas that led to a successful career as the owner and operator of A+ Home Services. Through his radon testing and home inspection company, he provided invaluable guidance to countless individuals and families within the community.Honorable service was deeply ingrained in Richard's character. He proudly served in the United States Navy and attained the rank of E-2 during his military tenure. His commitment to duty exemplified the core values of honor and integrity that defined his life.Beyond Richard's professional and military accomplishments lay a passion for various hobbies and interests that truly enriched his life. An avid fisherman, he cast his line into the waters time after time, amassing an impressive collection of over fifty rods and reels along the way. Richard's love for skiing led him to pursue it professionally for a period of time while also sharing his expertise as a ski instructor. From a love for the game of golf, Richard became a PGA golf professional and served as head pro at Lakeview Golf Course.Sports held a special place in Richard's heart, particularly basketball and football. He followed college sports with great enthusiasm, eagerly cheering on his favorite team, the University of Kentucky. Additionally, he was also an Eagle Scout and a member of the renowned Order of the Arrow.
Richard had a talent for woodworking which allowed him to bring beautiful creations to life. With skillful hands guided by passion, he built furniture, benches, and tables.Photography was another art form that captivated Richard's soul. With a brilliant eye, each of his photographs gave a glimpse into the beauty surrounding us and served as a testament to Richard's keen artistic sensibility.Richard was an active member of the Staunton Elks Lodge #351, where he formed strong bonds with fellow members who shared his values of community and service.Above all else, Richard valued family and cherished the moments spent together with loved ones. He leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy McGavock Dickerson; his sister, Margaret Dickerson Foster; his sister-in-law, Debbie McDonough and her husband, Rich; his mother and father-in-law, Louise and James McGavock; his nieces and nephews, Megan and Mike Hathaway, Ryan and Lindsey McDonough, and Lauren and Graeme Wren; and five great-nieces and nephews.In honoring Richard's memory, may we find inspiration to pursue our passions wholeheartedly and serve others with the same integrity and compassion that defined his life.
