Ralph S. Swain
Ralph Schaffer Swain, age 83, of Mt. Airy, MD, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born on June 25, 1940, in Washington, DC, the son of the late George O. and Katherine E. (McDonald) Swain. On July 29, 1965, Ralph married his wife of 58 years, Nancy (Warner) Swain, who survives in Mt. Airy, MD.
Mr. Swain was a 1958 graduate of Fairfax High School and was a Christian by faith. He had worked as a Manager of commercial rental property for Capital Property Resources in Sterling, VA. Ralph was a Veteran of the US Army and served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion #191 in Mt. Airy and he thoroughly enjoyed visiting there every day. He was fond of the Washington Redskins and loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Ralph leaves behind to cherish his memory: 2 sons, Mark Ralph Swain (Kathy) of Mt. Pleasant, MD, Glenn Ray Swain (Vicki) of Lovettsville, VA; a sister, Joan Rich of Fairfax, VA; a brother Brian “Biff” Swain (Mary) of Herndon, VA; 5 grandchildren, Trevor Swain (Meghan) of Thurmont, MD, Justin Swain (Carrie) of Fairfield, PA, Taylor Gemmell (Nathaniel) of Fairfield, PA, Kayla Swain, Jennifer Swain of Mt. Pleasant, MD; and 3 great-grandchildren, Austyn Gemmell, Asher Swain, and Carter Swain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: 2 brothers, Michael and Roderick Swain; and a sister, Sandra Brown.
Mr. Swain's family will receive friends on Thursday, January 11, 2024, 4-6 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will be on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Shirley Bland officiating. Interment will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, WV, with Military Honors conducted by the US Army. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Fork Rescue Squad, the American Legion Post #191, P.O. Box 24, Mount Airy, MD 21771, or the Circleville Presbyterian Church.
