Nellie May Campbell Koon

Nellie May (Campbell) Koon, 83, of Charlottesville passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Rosewood Village at Greenbrier, Charlottesville.
Born September 23, 1940 in Craigsville, VA, she was a daughter of the late Alfred Thomas and Grace Hazel Campbell.

Prior to retirement, Nellie worked as an accountant and was employed by the University of Virginia Medical Center and later the UVA School of Engineering. Nellie was a faithful member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church where she had served as a past elder and had previously designed the altar floral arrangements for Sunday services. Nellie had a servant’s heart and she along with her husband, Ray, volunteered their time and resources to help those in need with Habitat for Humanity, Citizens Help Community, and mission trips to Haiti, Mexico and Appalachia. Nellie will be remembered for her various acts of kindness and service to others, her love of family, cooking for those she adored, canning vegetables from her garden, and sewing.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life of 62 years her husband, Ray Koon; son, Charles “Bucky” Madison; sister, Phyllis Vernon; brothers, Larry A. Campbell, and Lester Campbell; and half-brother, Jack Strickler.

Survivors include her sons, Doug Koon and wife, Lydia, of Charlottesville, Danny Mayo and wife, Cindy, of Nelson County, and Kenny Schroeder; daughter-in-law, Sheila Madison of Lusby, MD; grandchildren, Ryan Madison and wife, Stephanie, Taylor Madison, Dillon Koon, and Jenna Koon; great-granddaughter, Lynnsie Madison; brothers, Leonard T. Campbell and wife, Dorothy, and Kenneth F. Campbell and wife, Faye; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., Waynesboro.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Rockfish Presbyterian Church, 5016 Rockfish Valley Highway, Nellysford, with Rev. Inger O. Manchester officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family asks those planning to attend the services to dress casually as that would have been Nellie’s wishes.

The family would like to give a special heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of Rosewood Village at Greenbrier and specifically the Memory Care Unit as well as Hospice of the Piedmont for their love and care of Nellie.
