Michael T. Goings
CHURCHVILLE – Michael Thomas Goings left this earth on January 1, 2024 at home. He was 84 years old.
Born June 20, 1939, he was the son of Clara Conlon Goings and Horace Joseph Goings of Watertown, New York.
Michael previously lived in York, Pa. for 30 years. In 1982 he settled in the Shenandoah Valley, where he remained for over 40 years as it offered what he loved the most - the beauty of nature. This was his passion in life - to take hikes in the mountains with friends and family. He was active in the local chapter of the Appalachian Trail Club where he met his best friend and wife, Suzanne.
Mike worked in a variety of occupations. A charismatic salesman, he earned the title “Salesman of the Year” in 1975 and 1976 for the Murry’s Steak Company. Later, working for F & E Check Writer, he sold equipment to banks and businesses throughout the tri-state area, enjoying the drives along the way through the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains.
In the late ‘80s, Mike was the original owner of Brian’s Card Shop in Harrisonburg, Va.
A man of many talents, Mike built his own log home in Keezletown and then a second log home in Churchville. He loved working with his hands and in addition to wood working, he enjoyed making pottery and playing the dulcimer.
Michael is survived by his wife of 27 years, Suzanne, his son, Brian Goings (wife Jenny) of Clinton, N.J., two grandsons, Eli Goings (wife Karlina) of Glasgow, Scotland, and Benjamin Goings. He also leaves two sisters, Patricia Freed and Sharon Goings; a half-brother, David Heltzel; two half-sisters, Maureen Hartman and Kathy LeCompte; a dear cousin Laurie O’Donnell (husband Jim); and brother-in-law Brian Carpenter of Gloucester, Va.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, January 4 at the residence, 197 Lime Kiln Rd., Churchville.
Bear Funeral Home is serving the family. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at bearfuneralhome.com.
