Maury Curtis Church, Sr.

Maury Curtis Church, Sr., beloved husband, and father, passed away peacefully at his Strasburg, Virginia home on August 25, 2023. He was 91 years old.

A funeral service for Mr. Church will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the Strasburg United Methodist Church, 114 West Washington Street, Strasburg, VA 22657.

Mr. Church was born in Joplin, Missouri on February 1, 1932. Maury spent much of his childhood moving from city-to-city while his father, a Senior Agricultural Engineer, worked on various private and government projects. Maury’s fondest childhood memories are of the time he spent hiking and camping on Heart Mountain outside of Cody, Wyoming where his family lived. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Maury earned degrees from George Washington University and the USDA Graduate School. He was certified to teach math and English, and did so briefly, until he became a computer specialist, and mathematician for the Department of Defense. Other than his love of the outdoors, Maury’s greatest joy came from his family.

He is predeceased by his parents, Maury and Mildred (Jones) Church, and his son, Maury Curtis Church, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, his daughters Margaret Bulbulian (Ron), Claire Church Brodd, his stepchildren Patricia Hunt (Joseph), John Cobb (Karan), Brian Cobb, and Sondra Cobb; and in his words, “many grandchildren and great grandchildren.”
