Mason Brockenbrough Smith

Mason Brockenbrough Smith passed away peacefully at his home on August 26, 2025. Mason lived an unassuming but joyful life and will be greatly missed by those he leaves behind.

Born March 6, 1944, in Winchester, Virginia, to the late Richard Smith Sr. and Branch Grove Smith, Mason spent most of his childhood and early adult life at the DeJarnette Center for Children and Western State Hospital. Fortunately, he moved to his home with Pleasant View, Inc. as an adult and lived and contributed to his community through extensive volunteer opportunities.

Mason loved spending quiet time reading, watching cooking shows, and drinking a Diet Coke. Favorite books included world atlases, collections of maps, and books about cows. He also enjoyed collecting stuffed animals and spent considerable time seeking his favorite animal, the next “big, stuffed cow.” Every birthday, his or someone else’s, gave Mason a reason to celebrate. Gifted with a memory for birthdays, once he knew your birthday, he never forgot it or how old you would be on your next birthday.

Many friends survive Mason, including Lex Halterman, Kendel St. John, and his loving caretakers, including Holly Sydnor, Phylicia Michael, Tiffany Hall, Alecia Chavez Loya, Henrietta Sakyi, Cindy Kyger, Spencer Glass, Tyler Carr, Bianka Waybright, and Wendy Moyers.

In addition to his parents, Mason was predeceased by his brother, Richard “Dickie” Smith, Jr., and his long-time friend, Gary Sheets.

Special thanks to the staff at Pleasant View, Inc., who taught, nurtured, and lovingly cared for Mason for many, many years. You are appreciated. Thanks also to Gentiva Hospice for seeing him through his last days.

A memorial service will be held at Pleasant View, Inc. Day Program on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 1:00 PM. Light refreshments and fellowship will follow the service.
