Mary S. Painter

STAUNTON – Mary Catherine Sellers Painter, 92, widow of Erskine Glenwood Painter, passed away Friday, October 23, 2026.

Born April 28, 1934 at Eidson Creek, Augusta County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Leighton Sellers, Sr. and Alice Anna Brooker Sellers.

Mrs. Painter was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School and Wilson Technical School. She was employed by Western State Hospital for 35 years as a beautician and barber prior to retirement. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Francis 1206. She was a member of the Verona VFW Post 10826 Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Austin Painter; sisters Anna Stratton, Marie Critzer and Helen Miller; and brothers Robert L. Sellers Jr., John E. Sellers, and William F. Sellers. Surviving are daughter Linda Sue Harvey of Staunton; brother Harold S. Sellers of Swoope; sisters Dorothy A. Sayre and Nancy B. Layne, both of Waynesboro; granddaughter Katy Danielle Julian Shaver and husband Bradley; great-grandsons Erskine Bradley Shaver, Eaghan Daniel Shaver and Kaleb Preston Shaver; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Margie Cooper and Kevin Straway.

A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, October 29 in Green Hill Cemetery, officiated by Father Matthias Lusembo.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bear Funeral Home.
