Mary Goines Lytle

November 7, 1929 - March 29, 2026

Mary E. Berry Lytle, 96, formerly of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2026 in San Mateo, California. She was born November 7, 1929 in Afton, Virginia, daughter of the late Merle Berry and the late Eva May Thomas Berry.

Mrs. Lytle attended Rosenwald School, later received her GED and for 25 years she was a teacher with the Head Start Program in the San Mateo public school system. She was the first African American Lab Tech at Waynesboro Community Hospital and member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall H. Lytle; her first husband, Henry McKinley Goines; her sons, William Earl Goines, Rondell Goines and Marshall Stanley Lytle; her brother and sisters, Fred Berry and his wife, Anna, Rachel Fitch and her husband, Lewis, Louise Brooks, Janie Hobson (Douglas) and Gladys Berry; her special nephews, Jerome Jackson, Wayne Brooks, Curtis Brooks and Lewis Lytle; her nieces, Karen Green, Patricia Hobson and Anna Strother, and her sister-in-law, Lillian Clark.

Survivors include her son, Henry Franklin “Frankie” Goines; her step-daughter, Lelia Ann Lytle and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am, Friday, April 17, 2026 in the Chapel of the Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Drive, Fishersville, conducted by Bishop Michael A. Turner. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Waynesboro. Serving as Active Pallbearers will be, Staneil “Fred” Berry, Terry Howard, Oren Strother, Levi Brooks, Franklin Woodson and Shane Strother.

The family will receive friends at the funeral from 10:00 am until the hour of the service.
