It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of our beloved Martha Garton, who peacefully departed this world on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Grant Memorial Hospital. She was 73 years old.
Martha, born on October 23, 1949, in Petersburg, WV, was the daughter of the late Robert Adonis (Don) Shumaker and Mary Blanche (May) Shumaker. She was a pillar of love and strength as a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, a steadfast sister, and a dear friend to many.
Left to honor her memory are her loving husband of 39 years, John Rodgers Garton, her two sons, Robert Handley Garton (Andrea) of Winston Salem, NC, and McNeil Andrew Garton (Madison) of Roanoke, VA. Martha's legacy continues through her adored grandchildren, Emilia, Hayes, Norah, and Cassell. She is also survived by her two sisters, Donna Protasi of Cape May, NJ, and Lois (James) Reed of Mt. Storm, WV, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Martha's educational journey began at Bayard High School, where she graduated in 1967. Her thirst for knowledge led her to pursue degrees from Potomac State College in Keyser, WV, and West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, further enriching her intellectual pursuits.
A woman of remarkable qualities, Martha's passion for family was unrivaled. She cherished every moment spent with her four grandchildren, their laughter and love filling her heart with boundless joy. Their memories together will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
Faith was an integral part of Martha's life, and she found solace, strength, and a sense of community within the walls of Main Street United Methodist Church. Her unwavering devotion to her church family forged lasting friendships and touched the lives of many.
Martha's vibrant spirit thrived through her many passions. The art of sewing and quilting provided her with a creative outlet, where she transformed bits of fabric into cherished heirlooms, each carrying her unique artistic flair and often sense of humor. Her garden, a sanctuary of colors and blooms, showcased her green thumb and the love she poured into nurturing nature's beauty.
A lover of birds and butterflies, Martha found immense delight in identifying various species and marveling at their songs and delicate presence. Her curiosity for the natural world was unquenchable, and her knowledge was generously shared with others.
Professionally, Martha's impact was far-reaching as a 4-H Extension Agent for WVU, dedicating four decades of her life to shaping the futures of countless children in Brooke and Grant counties. Through transformative programs like 4-H and energy express, she instilled knowledge, fostered growth, and left an indelible mark on the lives she touched.
Martha's light will continue to shine brightly through the memories she created and the love she shared.
