Margie Lee Young Metzger

September 29, 1935 - November 26, 2024

Margie Lee Young Metzger, 88, a resident of the Bridgewater Retirement Community, passed away at the Bridgewater Home on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

She is preceded by her husband, Ronald James Metzger. Margie and Ronnie enjoyed every day of their 51 years together.

Margie was born September 29, 1935 on a small farm in Augusta County to Arthur and Mary Catherine Atkins Young. Hard work was all Margie could remember getting up every morning at 4:00 AM to milk the cows before she went to school.

Margie prided herself with beautiful penmanship. Her mother had been a schoolteacher and made Margie practice daily on writing skills and mathematics. Those skills proved to be a steppingstone to a career in banking.

After graduating, she worked at the Planters Bank of Bridgewater (now known as Truist). For 19 years she worked as an assistant cashier and supervisor of the accounts reference center, and became the highest-ranking female officer in the bank's 77-year history. Margie became vice president and controller of the bank retiring after 38 years of dedication toward the bank and her community.

Margie had been an active member of the Skyline Chapter of the National Association of Bank Women, the Bridgewater Women's Club, a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for Bridgewater, a member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council.

Most of all, Margie enjoyed working in her flower garden with her husband Ronnie. After retirement, she and Ronnie enjoyed many trips to Myrtle Beach and traveled on many organized bus trips.

Although she never had children of her own, her nieces and nephews were like her own children. Ronnie and Margie were always in attendance of all family holidays and functions.

Margie is preceded in death by two brother, Hugh and Bernard Young, a sister, Janet Young Switzer, and a half-sister, Mary Alice Byers.

She is survived by one brother-in-law, Randy Metzger and wife Sarah of Kill Devil Hill, NC; Nieces and Nephews include: Shirley Corder of Mount Solon, Ronnie Young and wife wife Dawn of Fishersville, Dale Young (deceased wife Teresa) of Staunton, Wayne Young and wife Michele of Mount Solon, Karen Keller (deceased husband Kim) of Hagerstown, Maryland, Cindy Hughes and husband Keith of Charlotte, North Carolina, Cathy Parrish, deceased and husband Gary of Kiser, West Virginia, Don Switzer of Bridgewater, Darryl Switzer and wife Aileen of Bridgewater. Numerous great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 1, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral & Cremation Service in Bridgewater. The casket will be closed.

A graveside service will be held at 11AM on Monday, December 2, 2024 at Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery with Pastor Derek Boggs.
