Lloyd Wayne Delvaux

Lloyd Wayne Delvaux, 86, husband of Laura L. Livingston Delvaux, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2023, at UVA Medical Center in the loving embrace of his wife and children.

Lloyd was born on February 21, 1937, in Huron South Dakota. He grew up on a farm with his older brother Lowell and younger sister Lila. He attended a one-room elementary schoolhouse and later graduated from Yale High School. He would jest that he graduated from Yale in the Top 9 of his class as there were only nine in his class. He later enlisted in the Army and served overseas at NATO headquarters where he was also able to tour all over Europe. After the Army, he continued serving his country as a Federal Government employee in downtown Washington DC. He was grateful that his role only occasionally took him away from his family but allowed him to go all over the country and even to the White House and Capitol Hill. He was once commended as being the “best bargain the Government ever got”. He enjoyed a well-earned retirement after over four decades of service.

He met the love of his life, Laura while working a second job at Sears. They were married on May 8, 1965, and lived in various homes in Northern Virginia. They eventually settled in Annandale where they raised their two children, Brian and Katrina, who they adopted from Chile. They were active members of St. Michaels Church and School where Lloyd served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and Scout Master. Lloyd served with the Boy Scouts for almost two decades where he brought military structure, professional organization, and caring mentorship to the benefit of many. He loved the outdoors and the adventures that came with scouting. Ever the farmer, Lloyd enjoyed being outside gardening and having the best-looking lawn in the neighborhood. After retirement, Lloyd and Laura moved to Staunton, Virginia where they never tired of the view from their deck or hosting family gatherings. He loved Popeye’s fried chicken, scoping out deals at yard sales, model trains, and cheering on all the Washington sports teams.

Lloyd was always active: Swimming in a pond on the farm, playing basketball and running track in high school, and skiing until he was 70. In recent years, however, he was confronted with Parkinson’s disease. The team of Lloyd and Laura had what it took to fight back against this challenge. They found others to fight beside them at Rock Steady Boxing at the Staunton-Augusta YMCA. They never gave up and fought to the end.

Lloyd’s devotion to his family was only eclipsed by his Faith. Throughout his life, he was a devout Catholic and, for years, attended Mass daily. He truly tried to live the teachings of Christ in his words and actions. His life was a life of faith, service, and love, and will be truly missed by many. We are grateful for the time we had with him and pray for his eternal soul.

Lloyd is preceded by his parents, Jule F. and Grace R. (Johnson) Delvaux and his childhood dog, Sport. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Laura L. Livingston Delvaux, son Brian Joseph Delvaux and his wife Shannon Delvaux; a daughter Katrina Laurane Herron and her husband John Herron; grandchildren, Kaylan Herron, Ethan Herron, and Kathryn Delvaux; a brother Lowell Delvaux; and a sister Lila Delvaux.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Friday, June 9, 2023, at Henry Funeral Home.

A Memorial Mass will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 10, 2023, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish, 118 N New St, Staunton, VA 24401, with a graveside service to follow at Thornrose Cemetery, and a celebration of life afterwards.
