Larry Roes
Larry Dean Roes, age 67, of Fort Defiance, Virginia, passed away in a tragic accident on Saturday, June 15, 2024 in Hot Springs, Virginia.
Larry was born in Lowville, New York to Maurice and Rosella (Yancey) Roes on May 12, 1957. He graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School, in Lowville, New York. He married Alma Ann Zehr on June 3, 1978 in Lowville. He worked in construction his entire adult life and in 2003 founded Oaktree Builders, Inc. in Fort Defiance, Virginia, which will continue to be operated by three of his surviving children who are partners in the business. He was involved in the Augusta Home Builders Association and an active member of New Beginnings Church.
Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother, Maurice and Rosella Roes, infant brother Gene, and brother-in-law, Ben Yoder.
Larry is survived by his wife, Alma; daughters, Sarah (Nevin Yoder) and Laura (Derik Trissel); sons, Thomas (Laura Beiler), Stuart (Jessica Clifton), and Dwayne (Callie Sprouse); sisters, Janice (Joe) Roggie and Carol (Ben) Yoder; brothers, Ken (Rosemary), Ronald (Pam), Gary (Marjorie), Alan (Carla), and Beryl (Cathi); 12 beloved grandchildren, Landon, Layah, Madalyn and MarcAndre Yoder, Aiden Trissel, Kylee, Caleb, Asher and Abigail Roes and Clifton, Cullen and Isla Roes; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Larry enjoyed going for drives with his wife, Alma, whom he affectionately called “Sport”, particularly through the developments and homes under construction. Through the work of Oaktree Builders, Larry impacted many people within the Augusta County homebuilding community. He had a strong love of the building industry and the people with whom he worked. He instilled unwavering faith, selfless generosity, and a strong work ethic into the lives of his children. His grandchildren brought out his gentle spirit and hearty laugh. The time spent and the fast friendships formed at the Boiling Springs Rod & Gun Club in Bath County, VA brought him tremendous joy and an outlet for his love of hunting and fishing.
The family wishes to extend our sincerest gratitude to Scott Blackwell, Allen Peacock, and local emergency personnel for their swift response and communication the night of the accident.
Family visitation will be held on Monday, June 24, 2024 from 6-8 pm at Charlton & Groome Funeral Home in Fishersville, Virginia. A private burial will be held on Tuesday, June 25,2024 at Middle River Church of the Brethren. Pallbearers will be Thomas Roes, Stuart Roes, Dwayne Roes, Nevin Yoder, Derik Trissel, and Landon Yoder.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Augusta Expo, Building 1, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 5:30 pm with a brief message from Steve Wingfield. The service will be followed by a meal. The family welcomes and encourages all who were impacted by Larry to join us in celebrating his life and legacy.
