Kathleen H. Suter
Kathleen Humbert Suter, of Bridgewater, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Bridgewater Nursing Home at the age of 101 and 9 months.
Kathleen was born in Rogersville, Tennessee, on May 26, 1922. She was an identical twin in a family of six children. Kathleen and her siblings worked on the family tobacco farm and tomato canning factory. She graduated from Rogersville High School in Tennessee. Kathleen went on to study chemistry at Bridgewater College. While at Bridgewater College, she met her husband, William Carrol Suter Sr., a Bridgewater native. Bill Sr. joined the Suter Furniture factory with his family in Harrisonburg, while Kathleen worked at the Holston Ordnance factory. They married in 1945 after Bill returned from WWII. Kathleen worked with Bill at Suter's Furniture factory. She became a skilled upholsterer and salesperson.
Kathleen was an essential part of the furniture business and helped build it until she retired. During her retirement, she was an avid gardener. Kathleen participated in the Harrisonburg Garden Club. She was also active in her church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and bridge clubs and a competitive golfer.
Kathleen and Bill had four children: Helen Kathleen Suter Metcalf, Carol Jane Suter Michael, Dr. William Carrol Suter Jr., and JoEllen Suter-Burford. She has four grandchildren: Nicole Ann Fagerli, Jennifer Kathleen Metcalf Becker, Lindsey Carol Metcalf Grove, and Helen Renne Metcalf. She also has nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Bridgewater, that is open to all.
