Junior Isaac Whetzel
Junior Isaac Whetzel, age 85, of Petersburg, WV, passed away at deer camp, doing what he loved most, hunting with his son, Tim and Donna, on Monday, November 20, 2023. He was born on August, 27, 1938 in Landes, WV, the son of the late Isaac Harvey Whetzel and Violet Leona (Nazelrodt) Whetzel. On October 19, 1964, Junior married his wife, Janet May (Borror) Whetzel, who preceded him in death on July 9, 2015.
Mr. Whetzel attended Edgewood Elementary and Petersburg High School and was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Petersburg. He worked as a carpenter for Wayne Hyre (7 years), drove a truck for Grove Oil (9 years), J.D. Hinkle (5 years), and retired from Southern States after 21 years. Upon retirement, Junior worked an additional 6 years in transportation, driving a bus for the Potomac Valley Transit Authority. He was a kind and generous man who enjoyed helping others. His passion was hunting but he also loved his family deeply and would do anything to help others in need.
Junior is survived by: a son, Tim Whetzel (Donna) of Petersburg, WV; a step-son, Roy Kuykendall, of Petersburg, WV; a step-daughter, Debra Strother (Keith) of Front Royal, VA; a sister, Leota Riggleman of Arthur, WV; 3 brothers, Arthur Whetzel (Dorothy); Delmas Whetzel (Shirley); Ervin Whetzel all of Petersburg, WV; a Grandson, Jordan Whetzel of Kiln, MS; 4 Step-Grandchildren; and 4 Step-Great-Grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by: a son, Jimmy Allen Whetzel; a Grandson, Brian Whetzel; 2 brothers, Herman and Lemuel Whetzel; 2 step-brothers, Lawson Whetzel; and John Shirk.
Junior’s family will receive friends on Friday, November 24, 2023, 5-7 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023, 11:00 AM, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Calvin Redman officiating. Interment will be in the Whetzel Family Cemetery, Landes, WV.
