John S. Bartenhagen, Jr.

October 16, 1946 - April 12, 2023

John S. Bartenhagen Jr., 76, of Hinton, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. John was born in New York City in 1946 to the late John and Viola Bartenhagen. He was preceded in death by his first wife of over 48 years, Marian, and a daughter, Kirsten.

Five years ago, John reunited with his high school sweetheart, Carol Ann Ramsey, and they were married in 2018. John is survived by his son John Bartenhagen (LeAnn), daughter Kary Phillips (Ron), four grandchildren, a stepson Johan Vermeulen, stepdaughters Liesje Vermeulen (Martijn Hanssen) and Margarite Vermeulen (Ted Smetsers), and two stepgrandchildren Daniel and Lewis. John is also survived by his brother, Geoff Bartenhagen (Sandy).

John was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He grew up playing stickball on the streets of NYC and attended the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in the field of Applied Mechanics. John was a gifted engineer and natural-born leader. He served his country as a captain with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and then as a civilian employee for the Defense Logistics Agency in Virginia.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the kind and loving care provided by the nurses and aides from Sentara Hospice and for the support and assistance of the Clover Hill Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
