John Joseph Funk
John Joseph Funk, 81, of Grottoes passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at his home.
He was born in Crimora, VA on September 15, 1942 and was the son of the late John Harold and Robin (Coakley) Funk. He was lovingly married for 61 wonderful years to his wife Marjorie "Midge" (Smith) Funk, who survives.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by a son, John Adam Funk and his wife Joanne Mary Walsh, and grandson, Isaac Thomas Harold Funk of Sheffield, England; sister Ann Davis, of Indiana; brother Edwin Funk, of Lynchburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Robert E. Funk and Francis Funk; sister-in-law, Audrey Funk.
John was employed by General Electric Company as a Sales Specialist and served the Waynesboro and Salem areas for many years until he retired in 2000. He was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School and Valley Vocational Technical School.
In addition to being a caring and supportive husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and an involved member of his community, John enjoyed the outdoors and was a talented artist. He loved cold mornings fishing from his canoe on a fog covered lake, and his love of nature remains with us in his beautiful woodcuts and watercolor paintings that hang in the homes of many people who touched his life. John will be especially missed at the annual family reunions which he organized and led each year alongside Midge. John proudly served on the Grottoes Town Council for 12 years and was an avid supporter of the Grottoes Cardinals Baseball team.
Friends and family may sign a book of remembrance between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, on Wednesday, December 06, 2023 at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service in Grottoes.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, December 07, 2023, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg with Pastor Tim Munson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grottoes Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 498, Grottoes, VA 24441 or to Grottoes Rescue Squad at PO Box 1187, Grottoes, VA 24441.
