John Edward Hanger
John Edward Hanger, 87, widower of Lois (Wood) Hanger, formerly of Cortland Street in Waynesboro, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2024 at The Regency at Augusta in Fishersville.
Mr. Hanger was born in Augusta County on January 15, 1937, a son of the late Earl Bowman and Ruth (Meek) Hanger.
Mr. Hanger was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a member of the White Hill Church of the Brethren. He was also a member of the American Legion and Teamsters Local #29. John was faithful in contributing to “Toys for Tots” and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Hanger was preceded in death by a grandson, Bryan Alexander.
Survivors include a son, John Edward Hanger, II and his wife Arlene of Crimora; three daughters, Deborah Alexander and her husband Clarence of Fishersville, Cecelia Chott and her husband Tim of Cary, North Carolina, Tamra Poorman and her husband Dave of Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, John Christopher Alexander and wife Renee, Joshua Cody Alexander and wife Bethany, Cassie Hanger, David John Poorman, II and wife Jess and Neil Edward Chott; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Diehl and Ann Diehl and his “furr baby, Suzy”.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2024 in White Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery by Rev. Rick Diehl.
The family will receive friends following the service at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Clarence Alexander, 34 Hickory Ridge Lane in Fishersville, VA 22939.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
