James "Jim" David Ruleman
James David “Jim” Ruleman, 77, husband of Mary Ella (Callison) Ruleman, of Swoope, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at his residence, surrounded by his family and friends, after a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Ruleman was born in Staunton, Virginia on June 11, 1946, a son of the late William Adam and Lucille Virginia (Long) Ruleman.
He was known as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who supported his family extensively. He enjoyed attending church events, educational events, and cattle and horse shows. Over the years he also enjoyed cheering for his children and grandchildren at various sporting events.
Jim served in the United States Army from 1966 through 1968 after graduating from Buffalo Gap High School in 1965. He retired from United Parcel Service, feeders division, after 25 years of service. His passion was farming which he worked diligently at. Jim thoroughly enjoyed owning and operating his farm for 47 years. Along with a strong work ethic, he passed along the ways of farming to his children. He thoroughly enjoyed Mary’s cooking and baking, and sharing meals with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Alice Ruleman; a sister, Nancy R. Crenshaw; and a brother, Billy D. Ruleman.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 27 years, is a daughter, Lesley (Ruleman) Strother and her husband, Donald of Churchville; a son, William “Willie” Alan Ruleman of Swoope; three brothers, Larry Ruleman and wife, Carolyn of Mt. Solon, Tommy Ruleman and wife, Peggy of Deerfield, and Wesley Ruleman and wife, Ruby of West Augusta; a sister, Alice R. Vines of Staunton; a brother-in-law, Davey Callison and wife, Sarah of Staunton; a sister-in-law, Debbie Armstrong and husband, Roger of Staunton; five grandchildren, Bianca Lea Castillo of Churchville, Donald “DJ” Strother, Jr. of Churchville, Allison Michelle Ruleman, Ashley Katherine Ruleman, Virginia “Jenna” Elizabeth Ruleman, all of Staunton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, his physical body will be cremated.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday September 14, 2023, in Calvary Baptist Church, 105 Garland Drive, Staunton, Virginia, 24401, by Pastors Stewart McCarter, Bobby Campbell, and Mr. Bobby Sims.
The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the residence.

The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to his extended family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, farming community members, and caregivers, who all supported him these past nine months during his illness and throughout his life.
