Hilda Marie Tutwiler Dundas
STAUNTON – Hilda Marie Tutwiler Dundas, 96, formerly of Staunton, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023 in Blue Ridge Christian Home, Raphine.
Born April 28, 1927 in Staunton, she was a daughter of the late Floyd McKenzer and Roxie (Pennington) Tutwiler. After graduating from Beverly Manor High School, she attended Dunsmore Business School. She married William Oswald “Bill” Dundas on August 2, 1954. Mrs. Dundas worked as a secretary for VDOT and retired after 22 years. She was life-long member of Hebron Presbyterian Church where she served in many different capacities, including deacon, elder, women’s work, PEP Club, Sunday school teacher and on many committees over the years.
Mrs. Dundas was co-founder of the Staunton-area Association for Retarded Citizens (now The Arc of Augusta) and was a vigorous worker over the years, holding every office locally as well as a number of state offices. She received several civic awards for her work, including an award from the Soroptimist Club of Staunton in 1968 for her work with the mentally handicapped. She was also honored by Virginia Rehabilitation Assoc. in 1971 for her work in organizing services and service groups to help handicapped Virginians. She was listed in “Who’s Who in Virginia” in 1975 and included in the Bicentennial Blue Book Edition of “Community Leaders in Virginia” in 1978.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Dundas was preceded in death by her daughter, Ellen Marie Dundas, and brothers Clarence and Herbert Tutwiler. She is survived by her son, William Michael Dundas of Staunton; a brother, Elwood Tutwiler of Prince Frederick, Md.; three grandchildren, Eric G. Dundas and partner Lori Lowther of Catawba, Emily D. Breeden and husband Jonathan of Waynesboro, and William J. Dundas and fiancé Sheena Richards of Staunton and their mother, Linda Dundas of Fishersville; five great-grandchildren, Willow, Meadow and Eli Dundas, and Walker and Micah Breeden; Lori Lowther’s son, Luke Lowther; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24 in Hebron Presbyterian Church, officiated by Pastor Henry D. Scoggins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be W. Michael Dundas, Eric G. Dundas, William J. Dundas, Jonathan D. Breeden, Tom Tutwiler, Robert Brown, Sam Brown and Emerson Willard. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Christian and Larry Mayer.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the burial service, or friends may visit the home of W. Michael Dundas, 680 Cedar Green Rd., Staunton, Va.
