Helen Steele

December 24, 1939 - February 4, 2025

Helen Carol Steele, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at home at The Legacy at North Augusta Assisted Living, Staunton, VA.

She was born on December 24, 1939 in Greenville, VA, a daughter of the late Berl Hansford Steele and Edna Virginia (Strickler) Steele.

Helen is survived by her two daughters, Kimberly Lynn Knicely and Kristi Knicely Gregory; two grandsons, Timothy Blake Painter and Michael Stone Agnor; two sisters, Dolores Howdyshell and husband, Harold, their son, Jeff and his wife, Meredith, Jeff’s son, Ian, Janet Swartz and her daughter, Ginger Swartz, Ginger’s children, Rebecca Rohr and her husband, Curtis and Rebecca’s daughter, Lola James and Hillary Campbell her husband, Herman, and Hillary’s son, Hunter and Heath.

Helen was preceded in death by the father of her two daughters, Vicki Vaden Knicely and brother-in-law, JB Swartz.

Helen was a graduate of the Class of 1957,Wilson Memorial High School, Fishersville, VA, and enjoyed planning her class reunions. She graduated from Elizabeth Brant Business School in Staunton and worked in many capacities from clerking cattle sales, and as a secretary in insurance and human resource. Helen retired from medical records at Western State Hospital. She enjoyed her “fun jobs” selling jewelry at Glassner’s Jewelry and Lang‘s Jewelry in Staunton. She loved her church community and fellowship. She was raised in the Greenville United Methodist Church in Greenville, and was a member at Cherryvale United Methodist Church in Staunton.

A memorial service will be held at Greenville United Methodist Church at 3pm on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the request of the deceased, she will be cremated, and the service will be officiated by Dr. Kevin Haynes and special prayer by Pastor Jonathan Greer. Friends will be received after the service.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at The Legacy North Augusta for their loving kindness and care of Helen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Helen’s name can be made to the benevolent fund for The Legacy at North Augusta.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Charlton and Groome Funeral Home in Fishersville.
