Helen Shreve Sherman

Helen (Shreve) Sherman, age 96, of Maysville, WV, passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at her home. She was born on May 27, 1927, the daughter of the late Victor and Luella (Thorn) Shreve. Helen married Gerald Clifton Sherman, who preceded her in death on November 12, 2012.

Helen was a 1944 graduate of Petersburg High School and was the Valedictorian of her class as well as a member of the National Honor Society and the Golden Horseshoe Club. She attended Shepherd College and became a dedicated teacher. Helen applied those skills for 2 years in one-room schools in Grant County and for 3 years at the WV School for the Deaf in Romney, WV. She later became a Secretary at Petersburg Elementary School for 20 ½ years, until her retirement in June 1987.

Helen was a member of the Lahmansville United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School Class, sang in the choir and was chairman of the membership committee for several years.

Helen was the last member of her immediate family and leaves behind to cherish her memory: a daughter, Barbara Carr; 2 grandchildren, Eric Carr (Lorrinda) and Rachel Moyers (“Butch” David); and 5 great-grandchildren, Isaac, Hunter, and Tanner Carr, and Ethan and Hannah Moyers. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by: 1 brother, Glen; 2 sisters, Norma Vance and an infant, Thelma; a sister-in-law, Georgia Shreve; and a brother-in-law, Charles Vance.

Helen's family will receive friends on Saturday, August 12, 2023, 12-1 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg, WV. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Ann Harrison officiating. Interment will be in Lahmansville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital or to charity of choice.
