Hazel Naomi Harris

Hazel Naomi Harris, 91, of Staunton, Virginia, passed away on December 24, 2023, at the Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab Center in Fishersville, Virginia.
Ms. Harris was born on April 7, 1932, a daughter of the late Constance and Viola Harris. 
She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and spent most of her career as a hairdresser and stylist. Hazel was a member of Community Methodist Church in Staunton, Virginia. She was an avid shopper and she enjoyed buying gifts and distributing them to many of her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed family and spent years visiting and even staying with her relatives and friends. In her home, she kept a photograph of her high school graduating class, and she could recall every classmate by name. Hazel had a sense of humor and often quoted old wives’ tales, clichĂ©s and idioms in response to questions. In her quiet time, she enjoyed crossword puzzles and word games while relaxing with a bottle of Pepsi.
In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by sisters, Dolores Smith (Taylor) and Connie Vaughn (Kenneth); brothers, Richard Harris (Dorothy) and Edward Harris (Evelyn); her aunt, Mary Watson, who lived 102 years; a devoted friend, Cecil Smith; and nephews, Ronald Wertz, Leroy Smith, and Kenneth Vaughn Jr.
Surviving family members are her sister-in-law, Catherine Harris; Ms. Harris’ nieces and nephews, Larry Smith, Taylor Smith Jr. (Joyce), Corrine Wertz, Brenda Smith Bell, Sharon Ellis (Kevin), Edward Harris Jr. (Tammy), Sylvia Harris, Daryl Harris (Gloria), Jeffrey Harris, Deborah Covington (George), and Shirley Smith; cousins, Catherine “Cat” Smith, Kay Turner (Anthony), Mark Johnson, Trina Johnson, Peggy Johnson, Otis Leitch (Thelma), and Janet Earl; and a host of other cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2024 at Hunter Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia by Reverend Reginald Early.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
