George William "Toon" Smith

George William “Toon” Smith age, 83 of Petersburg, WV passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA.
George was born on April 17, 1940 in Petersburg, WV and was a son of the late Harry Lester Smith and Nellie Virginia (Ketterman) Smith.  In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Tyson William Smith; one brother, John E. Smith and three sisters, Nina Mills, Dora V. Appold and Maxine M. Smith.
George is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen R. (Sites) Smith; one daughter, Gail M. Shockey (Mike)  of Petersburg, WV; four sons, Ronald L. Smith ( Fiance Lori F. Moore) of Maysville, WV, Lester W. Smith (Valerie) of Petersburg, WV, David W. Crites (Amber) of Petersburg, WV and Daniel J. Crites (Brittany) of Petersburg, WV; eight grandchildren, Jordan, Hannah, Lance, Isabella, Isaiah, Bentley, Cheyenne and Caisom; one sister, Cornelia “Snook” Ours (Ralph) of Petersburg, WV and numerous nieces and nephews.
George attended Petersburg High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War with the Seventh Armored Division. George was a construction worker for over 50 years in Washington, D.C area.  He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).  George was a member of Moorefield Assembly of God Church.
George was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He enjoyed spending time with his family. 
Family will receive friends Wednesday, 6:00 -8:00   PM at Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. 
Funeral service will be Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 2 PM in the chapel of Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Wade Armentrout and Pastor D. J. Taylor officiating. 
Interment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery with Military Honors by Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454 and West Virginia Army Honor Guard.
