George "Mike" Michael Fitzwater
George "Mike" Michael Fitzwater, 84, of Grottoes, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at UVA Medical Center.
He was born on August 15, 1942 and was the son of the late Jilson Fitzwater and Myra Elizabeth (Magee) Fitzwater.
He grew up in Arlington, Virginia, where he enjoyed playing football and baseball and attended Washington and Lee High School. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a carrier, Federal Highway Administration and then spent his remaining time at the National Institute of Health as a Master Electrician, where he retired in 1999. In his spare time he owned and operated G&M Electric (Fairfax, Virginia). Mike was a member of the Masons, Haymarket Lodge #313, Kena Shriners, Alexandria Scottish Rite and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Mike was a long-time fan of the Washington Redskins (through the good times and bad), Capitals, and Nationals teams. One of his favorite past times was tailgating at RFK Stadium and FedEx field before the game. He enjoyed going to the games and also supporting UVA sports. He enjoyed traveling, cooking (a foodie in disguise), history, especially WWII, was an avid reader, playing cards, watching old movies and bowling. Loved fishing, hunting and the outdoors. Was an animal lover.
Mike was united in marriage to Olive M. Fitzwater, who survives.
In addition to his wife, Mike is survived by his daughter, Erin E. Fitzwater; brother-in-law John Mayer; niece Laura Mayer; cousins, Dan Magee (Helen), Carol Magee, Janet Steiner, Jackie Pratt, Jon Magee (Denise), Joyce Leggett (Dave), Glen Magee (Trish); numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; numerous brother and sister in laws and close friends Ronnie Tolson (Pam) and Kenneth Diehl (Delores). Also, his beloved bird, Jake.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kay Ellen Mayer and childhood friend Harry Gissel.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas, Virginia with Scott Barker officiating.
