George Cary Bailey
George Cary Bailey, 99, of Grottoes, took his final flight on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Bellaire at Stone Port. A man of resilience, integrity, and a love for the skies, George lived a life full of adventure, service, and devotion to family.
Born on May 1, 1925 in Sussex County, to Joseph and Mabel (Harvell) Bailey, George was raised in a hardworking farming community. When duty called, he answered-serving with honor in the U.S. Army in the 283rd Field Artillery Battalion during World War II, where he fought in the legendary Battle of the Bulge. His experiences in the war shaped his steadfast spirit and deep appreciation for life.
George's passion for aviation led him to a distinguished career as a field service representative with Pratt & Whitney, where he spent over 30 years ensuring the success of some of the world's most powerful aircraft engines. Though his heart soared with the planes he helped maintain, his soul remained grounded in faith and family. He was a dedicated member of Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church, where he found strength in community and worship.
On July 2, 1949, George married the love of his life, Johanna (Shallcross) Bailey, and together they built a family filled with love, laughter, and enduring bonds. He is survived by his children, Karen Mosser, Glenn Bailey, Jeffrey (Jodi) Bailey, and Darrell (Barbara) Bailey; his sister, Laurie Newsome; grandchildren, Michael (Angel) Mosser, Emily (John) Elrod, Matthew (Stephanie) Bailey, Allison (Vince) Moses, Joshua (Katerina) Bailey, Brent Bailey, Andrew (fiancée Alayna Campbell) Bailey, Leah Bailey, and Kendall Bailey; as well as ten great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; and nieces, June Cooley, Judy Brabrand, Marilyn Oliver, and Diana Pennington.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jean Bailey; his brother, Harvell Bailey; and his sister, Helen Griffin.
