Emma May (Davis) Craig
Emma May (Davis) Craig, of Verona, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family, on Monday, August 19, 2024, at 11:32am. She was 89 years old.
Emma was born on May 25, 1935, in Buckingham County, Virginia. She was a daughter of Jacob Israel Davis and Sara (“Sadie”) Elizabeth (Dunkum) Davis, and was one of 11 siblings, all of whom she has reunited with in heaven, except 2 surviving sisters, Marjorie and Elizabeth.
Emma dedicated 67 years of marriage to Charles T. Craig, until his death in 2020. Emma and Charles raised 5 surviving children on a small farmstead that they built from the ground up: Joyce (Craig) Landram, Roger Craig, Pamela (Craig) Boxler, Charles Quentin Craig, and Oneida (Craig) Williams. Emma had 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
Emma was a gentle soul with a quiet, yet mighty strength. Her most important life’s work was raising her 5 children on the farmstead. She was a dedicated, Christian mother who taught her children so very much. As a person and as a mother, frugalness and self-sufficiency was the name of her game. Many lessons were taught to her children through responsibilities of homestead work (sewing, cooking, caring for animals, making hay, and annual butchering, gardening and preserving). Many lessons were also taught through the freedom she provided her children to explore. Most importantly, Emma lived according to her Christian beliefs and values, teaching her children by example. Her 5 children are very fortunate and blessed to have been raised on the farmstead with such a loving, empathetic, and dedicated Christian mother. You did so very well, Momma. You deserve rest. Emma, Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Great Great Grandma- is forever in our hearts until we reunite with her in heaven.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Middle River Church of the Brethren Cemetery by Pastor Kathleen Michael.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
