Elizabeth B. Shuey

SWOOPE – Elizabeth “Betty” Bailey Shuey, 77, of Swoope, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024.

Betty was born May 8, 1946 in Swoope, and was the daughter of the late Phillip Samuel and Elizabeth Hannah (Hahn) Bailey. She graduated from Buffalo Gap High School in 1964. She earned certification as an operating room technician and was employed in that capacity by Western State Hospital until an accident forced her untimely retirement. Her favorite pastimes included sewing, crocheting, and playing cards. Betty was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.

On April 24, 1971 she married James William Shuey, who preceded her in death on September 21, 1998.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, William Eric “Billy” Bailey and Phillip Samuel “Sam” Bailey II. Surviving are her daughter, Catherine McNeal and husband Jeremy of Swoope; three grandchildren, James McNeal (Brenna Kent) of Fishersville, Hannah McNeal Turazzo (husband Joe) of Richmond, and Taylor McNeal (fiancé Collin Lendermon) of Raleigh, N.C.; and a niece, Cynthia Fitzgerald of Staunton.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14 in Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Lester Kennedy. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall of Mt. Tabor Church.
