Edward "Ed" Showalter
Edward Lee "Ed" Showalter Sr., 92, of Timberville, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023.He was born on December 10, 1930, in Broadway and was a son of the late Baylor William Showalter and Mary Elizabeth Reid Showalter.Ed graduated from high school at the Timberville School and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950. He served as a submarine quartermaster in the Korean War.Ed established Showalter Signs and Silkscreening in the 1970s, which he owned with his sons and daughter, Mary. He retired in 1992.Ed had previously worked in construction and for People's Life Insurance. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and the American Legion. He served as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America and as organist for Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Luray.Ed was an avid golfer and pool player, and loved cribbage and card games. He also played the trombone in the Top Hat Band.His first wife, Grace Aileen Sutphin Showalter, preceded him in death. In 1998, Ed married Bonnie Gordon Koch Showalter, who survives.Surviving in addition to his wife are six children, Eddie Showalter Jr. and wife Teresa of Stanley, Wayne Showalter and wife Sandra of Shenandoah, Steve Showalter of Stanley, Tony Showalter of Luray, Mary Showalter and spouse Cindy Smith of Earlysville, and Lisa King and spouse Steve of Fayetteville, PA; four stepchildren, Kathy Smith and spouse Mike of Timberville, John Koch and wife Elizabeth of Crimora, William Koch and wife Diana of Buffalo, NY, and Phil "Karl" Koch and wife Carol of Durham, NC; two siblings, Anna Louise Moyer and Weldon "Lefty" Showalter; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by five siblings, Stanley Showalter, Everett Showalter, Paul Showalter, Margaret "Peggy" Stauffer and Clayton Hamilton Showalter.A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church by Father Edwin Perez. Burial will be in the Beahm's Chapel Cemetery in Luray.The Knights of Columbus from KOC 8393 in Luray will serve as pallbearers.The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home on Monday, October 23, with Rosary at 7 p.m. conducted by Father Perez.Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
