Douglas W. Shifflett

Douglas W. Shifflett Sr., 80, of Grottoes, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023.

He was born on December 1, 1942, and was a son of the late Vernon and Clara (Higgs) Shifflett.

Doug retired from Reynolds Metals in 2002 after 42 years of service. He served as Mayor of Grottoes for 18 years and was an avid baseball fan. He was inducted to the RCBL Hall of Fame in 2015 where had played for over 20 years in the county and valley league. Doug also played for and managed the Grottoes Cardnals for many years. He was graduate of Elkton High School where he played football, baseball, basketball and ran track. He was also a member of the 13 man "Iron Man" football team in 1958.

Doug was united in marriage to Kathy (Kaylor) Shifflett, who preceded him in death in 2022.

Doug is survived by children, Jeff (Suzanne) Shifflett of Grottoes, Doug (Renee) Shifflett Jr. of Staunton, Tim (Becky) Nicely of Grottoes, and Jeff (Rhonda) Nicely of Grottoes; grandchildren, Aaron, Nicole, Dylan, Dalton, Austin (Nikki); great-granddaughter, Karsyn; siblings, Dennis (Lou Ann) Shifflett, and Dinah Balderson; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette Shifflett, and a brother, Gary M. Shifflett.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 PM on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023 at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service in Grottoes.

A graveside service celebrating Douglas's life will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, November 28th, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, with Pastor Guy Hudson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grottoes Fire Department and/or the Grottoes Rescue Squad.
