David Heatwole

May 4, 1953 - April 27, 2026

David Alan Heatwole, 72, of Lakewood, Washington, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, following complications from congestive heart failure.

Born in Waynesboro, Virginia, Dave was the eldest son of Patricia Lily Heatwole and Gene Edward Heatwole, both of whom preceded him in death. He carried with him the values of hard work, loyalty, and humor that would come to define his life and the way he connected with others.

Dave was a proud graduate of Fishburn Military School, Class of 1972, and went on to attend the Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1976. His years in military school shaped his discipline and camaraderie, but those who knew him best would say he never lost his playful, mischievous edge. In his final days, he was able to return to those roots, spending a meaningful and joyful weekend with good friends at his 50-year class reunion.

He retired from his career as a manager at Ace Hardware, where he became a familiar and trusted face in the community. Whether helping someone find the right tool or sharing a story at the counter, Dave had a way of making every interaction feel personal. He truly did not know a stranger.

Above all else, Dave was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Eliza Heatwole; his sons, Billy, Michael, and Daniel; his sister, Jean Ann; and a growing legacy of grandchildren: Rachel, Johnny, Toby, Leo, as well as his two great-grandchildren Matthew and baby Malcolm. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steven Heatwole of Chesterfield County.

Known affectionately by his self-made title, “Pretty Paw Paw,” Dave took great pride in his family. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, following sports, and, most of all, spending time with those he loved. A natural jokester, his irreverent humor and well-timed pranks brought laughter to countless moments.

Dave’s devotion to his family was steady and unmistakable. He showed up, made people laugh, and made them feel they mattered.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date by his children. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Military Institute in honor of the Class of 1976 by visiting the link below.

He will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and the lasting joy he brought to others.
