David Charles Smith
David Charles Smith, 77, husband of Joan H. Smith of Stuarts Draft, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at his residence. He was born in West Lafayette, Indiana on May 12, 1949, son of the late Charles Glen Smith, MD and Matilda Anne (Lybrook) Smith. David proudly served as a medic in the Army National Guard before beginning a long and meaningful career as a public defender in both Arizona and Virginia. His commitment to helping others was an important part of who he was. David also loved sports and the friendships that came with them. While living in Arizona, he coached co-rec softball and enjoyed being part of the team and community. He was a devoted sports fan, including a longtime fan of the Washington Redskins. He was also a proud Corvette owner and enthusiast and took great pleasure in his cars. David had a wonderful sense of adventure and a talent for creating unforgettable stories. On December 26, 1965, at Langley High School, he temporarily held the Guiness world record for the longest continuous Monopoly game—a memorable accomplishment that reflected both his determination and his sense of fun. David and his beloved wife, Joan, shared many years of love and adventure. Since his childhood, David had attended the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend. In 1981, David proposed to Joan in the infield at the race, creating a special memory that they carried with them throughout their marriage. From 2017 to 2025, David and Joan lived in North Carolina before returning to Staunton. During their years in North Carolina, David especially enjoyed his time at the beach, appreciating the peaceful moments and time spent with Joan. Above all else, David always prioritized his family. No matter where life took him, his family remained at the center of his world. He treasured his time with those he loved and believed that the memories created together were among life's greatest gifts. In addition to his wife of 45 years, he is survived by his children, Sarah J.R. Smith (Christopher Smith) and Tony Smith (Jamie); grandchildren, Anthony, Lila, Cory, C.J., Lenore, Kora, and Koty; sisters, Sue Clay (Jeff) and Emily Houts; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
