Daniel Warner

November 22, 1937 - November 1, 2026

Dr. Daniel Warner, 88, formerly of Fairfax, Virginia, died November 1st at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster, MD, where he had been a resident since 2021.

Dan and twin brother, Don, were born on November 22, 1937 to the late Gabriel and Sylva (Heavener) Warner in Woodstock, VA.

Dan graduated from Woodstock High School in 1956 and entered the Marine Corps the next day where he served two years.

After the Marine Corps, Dan graduated from Lincoln Memorial University with a degree in Physical Education & Biology. In 1961 he began his career teaching and coaching at Clarke County High School. He also completed a master's degree in Physical Education from George Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt University).

Then the real adventure began! For six years, Dan taught for the Department of Defense in the Overseas Dependents Schools in Germany. He taught one year in Frankfort, followed by 5 years in Bonn at the Bad Godesburg American School. During that time Dan made the most of every opportunity, traveling to 33 countries during school breaks and participating in study abroad summer programs in England, Austria, and Germany.

When Dan returned to the U.S., he accepted a teaching position with Fairfax County Public Schools where he would continue teaching, primarily 7th grade science, until his retirement in 1995.

Shortly after moving to Fairfax he was reunited with Sarah Hinkle, who was also a teacher for FCPS. They were married on August 4, 1974 and they made their home in Fairfax for the next 47 years. They welcomed one daughter, Becky.

Dan was a lifelong learner. He earned additional degrees from the University of Georgia (M.A. in Educational Psychology), Asbury Theological Seminary (M.A.R. in Christian Education), and ultimately a Ph.D. in Teacher Education from Walden University. He was always looking for another course to take or an additional teaching certifi cation to complete!

In addition to teaching in the classroom, Dan taught Drivers Education for Fairfax County after school and in the summers for 25 years. He continued in an administrative role with the program until 2011.

Dan had a strong faith in Jesus Christ. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and doting grandfather.

He is survived by a daughter, Becky Paschal and her husband, Joe, of Manchester, MD; grandchildren, Carolyne, Abigail and Will Paschal; a sister-in-law, Rachel Warner, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah, of 52 years in June of this year. He was also predeceased by all five of his siblings.

The family will receive visitors from 1:00-2:00 pm on Sunday, November 22 at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service, Bridgewater, VA. The service will follow at 2:00 p.m.

Dan was a strong supporter of Christian colleges. In lieu of fl owers, contributions may be made to Taylor University (taylor.edu) or Asbury University (asbury.edu) in his memory.
