Charles W. Allen

STAUNTON – Charles William Allen, 76, of Staunton, passed away Thursday (February 8, 2024) in Brightview Baldwin Park.

Born April 25, 1947 in Charlottesville, he was the son of Charles Gordon Allen and Nell Virginia (Dudley) Allen.

Charlie was a 1965 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, his Master’s from the University of Tennessee, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Virgnia Tech. Following his graduation, Charlie joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1976, and worked in the CIA’s Directorate of Science and Technology in numerous positions utilizing his electrical engineering expertise, primarily in the field of radio communications. Charlie retired in March, 2016, after a long and distinguished career.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving family members include his wife, Ellen Lotts Allen; two sons, John Gordon Allen (Cynthia) of Falls Church and Scott Michael Allen (Cecilla) of Manassas; a stepson, Charlie Clouse of Bridgewater; a brother, James H. Allen of Churchville; and grandchildren, William, Brendan, Carlos, Lucy, and David. He is also survived by a niece, Elizabeth (Sean) Lynch; nephews, Matt Lotts, Andy Allen (Emily) and Charlie Allen (Veronica); two great-nieces, Madeline and Natalie; a first cousin, Mattie Jo Coll; and a special friend, Robin Tanner-Sharp.

A private graveside service will be held in Green Hill Cemetery.
