Cecil "Sonny" Bly
Cecil “Sonny” Warner Bly, Jr., 88, of Strasburg, VA, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester Virginia.
Sonny was born on December 29, 1936, in Strasburg, VA son of the late Cecil W. Bly, Sr. and the late Bernice Wingate Nitterhouse Bly. Sonny called Strasburg his home for the majority of his life. He left school in the eighth grade to work for Crestliner Boat Plant in Strasburg for eight years and then at the Strasburg Moose as a bartender. He went on to become a truck driver, which he absolutely loved. Sonny worked for many local trucking companies including Fulton Trucking, Smith Transfer, Gabler’s, Charles W Karper, W. C. Transport. He either drove their equipment or was an owner operator as C. W. Bly Trucking. Sonny retired as a truck driver on October 4, 2018. He owned High Point Restaurant between 1991 thru 1997 which he ran with the help of Judy. Sonny enjoyed working with the staff and socializing with all the regulars at the restaurant. He never met a stranger and loved talking to people. He was proud of his family and loved visiting his grands and great grands. Sonny would often drop by their homes to hold the babies, fall asleep in a chair with them and play and laugh with the toddlers. Sonny was a proud lifetime member of the Strasburg Moose Lodge, The Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 824 Winchester, and American Legion Shenandoah Post 77 in Strasburg. He looked forward to the Thursday afternoons at the Legion. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his granddaughter Amy Brown; brothers, Richard Bly and Donald Bly; sisters Vivian Hoffman and Shirley Spiker.
Sonny is survived by his daughters, Rhonda Hill and husband Lyle, Tammy Brown, Sherry Ritenour and husband Barry, and Trudy Kerr and husband Merle; his grandchildren, Brian Miller (Michele), Justin Brown (Trisha), Jonathan Ritenour (Shauna), Lacey Crouch, Michael Kerr, Billy Hughes (Malika), and Summer Kerr; his great-grandchildren, Macie Miller, Callen Miller, Clara Miller, Blair Crouch, Brett Ritenour, Payton Ritenour, Lylah Hughes, and Lili Hughes; his sister, Ida (Sissy) Strosnider, and many nieces and nephews and his companion Judy Bly.
A graveside service for Mr. Bly will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2025, at Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, VA with Pastor Bobby Funkhouser officiating. The family will receive friends at Stover Funeral Home and Crematory in Strasburg, VA on Sunday, March 30, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
