Carolyn Elizabeth (Mitchell) Hensley
Carolyn Hensley of Staunton passed away at Aviva Baldwin Park on Friday, May 16, 2025. She was born April 10, 1943 in Newport News, Virginia to the late Sydney and Dorothy Mitchell.
While attending Radford College, she met Allen Hensley and was in love at first sight. They were married in January, 1963, which lasted over 62 years.
She is survived by her husband, Allen, two sons, Michael and Christopher Hensley, and a daughter, Robin Graves (Jeff), two grandsons, Jack and Sam Graves, her sister, Lorraine Magnuson (Dick), two nephews, Steve and John Rowe, two nieces, Tina Simpson Hatcher and Lisa Simpson Greer, as well as five cousins.
In Carolyn’s early years of marriage, she led the Christ Lutheran Church Children’s Choir, enjoyed attending church softball games, participated in the PTA, and supported her husband’s Boy Scout Troop #30 for over twenty years making blue neckerchiefs for each scout. She enjoyed family campouts and belonging to the Travelling Wranglers Campers’ Club. Carolyn and Allen enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing, going to Virginia Tech football games with tailgating, and attending all her children’s school activities. In addition, Carolyn loved to work outside in her flower beds. She loved her black and white tuxedo cats of which there were always two. Carolyn and Allen relished their annual trips to the Nags Head and Duck, NC, with family, friends, and The Crab Leg Committee. She was a pianist, ukelele player, and lover of all kinds of music, especially country.
As her children grew older, she began working at Mary Baldwin College in admissions and alumni offices for 31 years. She sang in the choir at Covenant Presbyterian Church and was a member and past moderator of the Presbyterian Women, being awarded “honorary life membership”. Carolyn was a member and past regent of Beverley Manor Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as a member and past president of the Liberty Hall Chapter of The Colonial Dames 17th century.
Carolyn was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be forever remembered for her gentle manner, kindness, and love.
We would also like to thank the medical staff and aides at The Legacy, Aviva Baldwin Park, and Augusta Health Hospice for the love and tender care that was given to Carolyn.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, June 14, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2001 N. Coalter St, Staunton, VA, with Reverend John C. Peterson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church in Carolyn’s memory.
