Carlton Everett Minnick
Carlton Everett Minnick, 90, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at White Birch Communities.
Carlton was born in Virginia on September 19, 1933 and was the son of the late James Frank Minnick and Leona Mae (Cook) Minnick.
He was a graduate of Bridgewater High School class of 1952 and served in the US Navy where his duties took him to many overseas ports. He served aboard the USS Albany most of his military time. Upon leaving the military, he worked at various businesses throughout the valley before moving to the Washington DC area and becoming employed with the Federal Government from which he retired in 1993 after 34 years.
On December 8, 1966 he married the love of his life, Janet M. (Barger) Minnick who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Ricky Minnick, from a previous marriage; grandsons, Ricky Minnick Jr., James Minnick (Amy) and Jason Minnick (Amber), all of Bridgewater; five great-grandchildren; sister, Alda Windsor; foster sisters, Doris Cave and Shirley Smith; brother-in-law, Fred Wenger; sisters-in-law, Betty Bailey, Audrey Hayghe and Linda Pence (Thomas); nieces, Cindy Windsor (Paul), Tanya Bradford and Sarah Deavers (Chad); nephew, Kevin Bailey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister in their childhood, Deray and Naomi; brothers-in-law, Donald Bailey, Benjamin Windsor and Lewis Barger; sister-in-law, Barbara Wenger.
Upon retirement, Carlton and Janet purchased a winter home in Sun City Center, FL, where they spent the next 20 winters in their lakefront home enjoying the warm weather and spending time with family and friends on the lake. They returned to their home in Harrisonburg fulltime in 2013.
Carlton was an avid hunter and fisherman. He grew up in a mountain environment and never lost the love of spending time there. He also spent many hours at his riverfront property in the northern neck of Virginia where he would take many friends on fishing trips into the Chesapeake Bay in his boat. He also loved to watch baseball and you would find him at the County/Valley league games especially the Montezuma Braves and the Harrisonburg Turks. He was also a fan of the Washington Nationals and the Baltimore Orioles and followed the Turner Ashby and Broadway High School sports.
Carlton's family appreciates the love and support of Cindy Windsor, Linda Pence, Betty Bailey, Tanya Bradford, and Fred Wenger, as well as the nursing staff at White Birch Communities and Sentara Hospice during his illness.
There will be a visitation on Monday, October 2, 2023 from 6 PM - 8 PM at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service in Bridgewater.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial to follow at Briery Branch Church Cemetery.
