Carl E. Caricofe
Carl Eugene Caricofe, Sr., 86, passed away at his farm in Fort Defiance on Monday, January 29, 2024.Carl was born on December 26, 1937, in Augusta County, to James Howard and Margie May Mitts Caricofe.On September 1, 1956, he was married to Pauline "Polly" Elizabeth Sutherland by Reverend David F. Glovier in Verona.As a youngster, he lived in several different areas and worked on several farms.Later, as a drywall contractor he did work up and down the Shenandoah Valley and in doing so, trained others to do that line of work, which enabled them to start their own businesses. Carl also built houses around the area.Carl realized his dreams of having his own farm and raising cattle. In 1991, he raised chickens for Wamplers and then when they sold to Pilgrims, he raised poultry for them until his last flock went out on July 29, 2016. Cattle still run on the farms.Carl is survived by his wife of 67 years, as well as their three children, Carl, Jr. (Whitney), Monique Houser (Coleman), and Stoney; his grandchildren, Michael Carciofe, Angela Startt, Heather Rubemaker, Casey Houser, Holly C. Thornton, Faith Caricofe, and Stoney Lee Caricofe II; his great-grandchildren, Dillon and Jacob Caricofe, Sarena and Sabian Butler, Madison Eavey, Ayden Thornton, Sydney and Zelda Caricofe, Alaina and Athena Riner and Charles is on the way, and Anastasia and Brenna Rubemaker; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Lou Selmon.In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his two sisters, Margaret Huffman and her husband, Randy and Shirley Parrish, and a brother-in-law, Aggie "Sonnie" Selmon.The family would like to especially thank Carl's nephew, Nathan Selmon and family for the numerous hours of work for and with Carl and to his grandson, Michael Caricofe, for helping us out. The family would like to give a big shout out to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Augusta Health in Fishersville who were there for Carl in his time of need, to the Hospice of the Shenandoah healthcare nurse team, the rescue squad, the State Police, the Augusta County Sheriff's Department, and all responders on the accident scene.The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery with a funeral service beginning at the church at 3:00 PM with the Reverend Michael Reaves officiating.Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Stoney Caricofe II, Dakota O'Hanlan, Nathie Selmon, Jr., Nathan Selmon, Michael Caricofe, Dave Thornton, Bill Lala, Bernie Cline, John Lamb, and Donald Smith.In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those desiring may make memorial contributions to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).
