DEERFIELD - Barry Wayne Dula, 79, of 2949 Deerfield Valley Road, passed away Saturday (December 4, 2021) in Augusta Health.
Born June 2, 1942 in Deerfield, he was the son of the late William Newton “Day” and Eleanor Virginia (Morris) Dula.
Barry graduated from Churchville High School and completed training at Woodrow Wilson Technical School. As a certified machinist and a tool and die maker, he was employed in numerous venues through his career: he spent several very valuable, early years at General Electric, and was later employed by AMP, Rule Volkswagen Honda. He retired from Virginia Department of Transportation as automotive maintenance supervisor after 22 years of service. Outside of his employment, Barry was also extremely generous with his time and talents, frequently servicing vehicles for family and friends throughout the community. His great enthusiasm for cars was evident at home as well – he collected and restored antique muscle cars, and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren all things automotive.
Barry was an active member of Deerfield Baptist Church and served in numerous capacities, including deacon and Sunday school teacher, and enjoyed singing in the choir and the men’s quartet. He was a member of the Deerfield Ruritan Club and a charter member of the Deerfield Fire Department. Barry was an avid outdoorsman, and especially enjoyed hunting. He was fiercely devoted to his grandchildren, never missing a ballgame or an opportunity to be involved in their lives.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 56 years, Susan Peters Dula; two dear children, Timothy Wayne Dula and wife Lisa of Deerfield, and Bethany Dula Bowers and husband John of Staunton; a sister, Ramona B. Lovegrove and husband Fred of Staunton; four grandchildren, Austin P. Bowers (wife Brooke), Ashlea Bowers Hevener (husband Tyler), L. Megan Dula (Casey Lewis), and A. Day Dula (Allison Wilhoit); five great-granadchildren, Brayden Fix, Abigail Bowers, Letti Bowers, Peyton Hevener and Brock Bowers; a niece, Michelle McBryde (husband Lee); and a life-long friend, Leon Bartley.
