Avis "A.C." Clifton Koontz

April 14, 1940 - May 17, 2025

Retired Detective Lieutenant Avis Clifton “A.C.” Koontz, 85, husband of Carol Lee (Ailer) Koontz, of Red Oaks Drive, Staunton, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025 in the Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab in Fishersville.
     Detective Lieutenant Koontz was born on April 14, 1940 in Rockingham County, Virginia, a son of the late Justus Kyser Koontz and Margaret (Ruffner) Koontz.
     Detective Lieutenant Koontz was a veteran of the United States Army and was retired with 32 years of service with the Staunton Police Department. During his years of service as a Policeman, Detective Lieutenant Koontz was awarded the Medal of Valor from the Staunton Police Department and the Crime Prevention Practitioner of the year award. Along with his dedication to law enforcement, Avis was a 50 year member of the Staunton Masonic Lodge 13 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Lynchburg Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and a member of the Harrisonburg Fraternal Order of Police lodge 13.
     In addition to his parents, Mr. Koontz was preceded in death by a son, Walter Avis “W.A.” Koontz; a daughter, Teresa Kay Koontz; and a brother Glenn J. Koontz.
     Surviving in addition to his wife of 20 years is a son, Charles J. Koontz of Arizona; a daughter, Marie Drinkhouse and her husband Robert; seven grandchildren; and two special friends, Michael Rankin and Jamie Lawson.
     Those desiring may pay their respects on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
     A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2025 in the Elk Run Cemetery by Rev. Peter Choi.
     The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the nurses and staff who cared for Mr. Koontz during his stay at the Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab Center.
     Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
