Angela Serrill Carlson
Angela Serrill Carlson, formerly of Washington, D.C., passed away on April 14, 2023 at the age of 87 in Staunton, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by longtime partner William Augustus Reid, and by former husbands Richard Southwood and Roy Carlson. She is survived by four children, Gail Coleen Hanger and husband Philip, Jeffrey Lynn Southwood, Andrea Kathleen Allen and husband Robert, and Kenneth Henning Carlson and wife Ok Kyung So; a sister, Sandra McNeill and husband Bradford; grandchildren Abigail Hanger, Elizabeth Hanger Miller and husband Thad, Paul Hanger, Hannah Carlson and husband Nathaniel Stone, Grace Carlson, Faith Carlson and Hope Carlson; and a number of great-grandchildren.
Angela was born on February 16, 1936 to Thurman and Thelma Corbin. She graduated from Calvin Coolidge High School. She worked at Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C., married, and became a homemaker, raising four children. She loved books, and over the years worked at several book stores, arranging signings and setting up a tea room. She volunteered at the Staunton Library. Her other love was plants and flowers. In later years she set up a small business called “City Gardens” in Washington, D.C. where she tended small gardens on Capitol Hill; she also sold flowers, fruits and vegetables at Eastern Market. She eventually moved permanently to Staunton to be near her family.
After suffering a stroke and aphasia, she became a resident of Brookdale Staunton where she was lovingly cared for by the staff. She had a special fondness for Augusta Health Hospice nurse Robin.
Angela will be remembered for her loyalty to her friends and her generous spirit.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visiting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20 in Bear Funeral Home, Churchville.
